Thailand is safer than travel in the US. I was there in Feb, Mar, Apr 2007 and will be there again in Apr 2008. Just protect yourself the way you would in the states (don’t flash money, don’t go down dark alleys, don’t hangout in places you don’t know after dark etc…)
if you are going south around khao lak area and working in a burmese ref camp or working for the tsuami vol ctr then you will find it is one of the safest places in the world and the people are really friendly i will be back there at the end of this mth i cant wait
Usually the volunteer group heads to the nort or north-eastern part of Thailand, is this right? These places are safe. The only places to avoid are the 3 southern provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat. As long as you are not heading into any of these provinces, you will be perfectly fine. Just mind the mosquitoes.
Frank is ridiculous and you do not need to worry even near Malaysia. There are no Islamic terrorists waiting for you in Malaysia. I am a US expat who grew up there and it is perfectly safe to travel all throughout Thailand and even further south towards malaysia. Just be smart and respectful. SO many american tour groups are rude and get mad when things “aren’t like America.” Well, of course it isn’t you are in Thailand. As long as your group respects the culture and the people you will have absolutely no problems. The people are wonderful in thailand and you will have a great trip!
I don’t know what part of Thailand your group is going to, but I have been to Thailand many many times (I work in a nearby country) and I think if you follow common sense like you would in the USA or wherever you are from, Thailand is quite safe.
I have 2 very young preschool aged children and I don’t hesitate to bring them to Thailand. We actually go there for superb international quality health care.
What are your fears?
I have been often in Thailand and sometimes even with my children.
Thailand is safe – except the south of the country near Malaysia because of some islamistic terrorists.
Sometimes it happens also in Bangkok that a bomb explodes but not more often than in other countries of the world (sowhere is safe).
