Is It Customary Or Pushy To Ask To See Your Hotel Room First?
I have read a number of guide books, pocket guides and so on about travel in Thailand. A recurring theme seems to be that it’s OK to ask to see your room before paying for it, to check for hot water, a/c doesn’t rattle like a freight train, even to turn over a pillow or two to check for evidence of bedbugs. Is asking to do this acceptable behavior, or would a Thai consider it to be rude?
Would you say “doo gorn, krup?” or doo gorn dai, krup?” (forgive the spelling please)

No its fine and i have done it scores of times . Its business and Thais are very customer orientated . Customer satisfaction is important to them
Easy way to say is ” Kor Doo Hong Korn Krup
Kor = Please give me ; Doo= see ;Hong =room ;Korn = first
or Doo Hong Korn Dai Mai( May i first see the room )
Many many time the hotels I have gone to in Thailand have offered to show the room without being asked. I would say that your not being pushy to ask because who knows without looking what the difference between a deluxe and superior room? Also in some of the smaller boutique hotels two superior rooms may be different. I haven’t run into a hotel that didn’t want you to enjoy the accommodations and if they did would you really want to stay there?
no infact i would definitely ask otherwise you will get the crap rooms…
This is Thailand and the moment you trust a thai is the moment you get exploited… just always always expect the worse and you wont get any problems..
when i say expect the worst i dont mean be miserable and glum about everything. i just mean dont expect anyone to give you anything for free..
you want something here you ask, there is a trick to getting what you want and that is asking softly with a smile and a joke…
serious people dont last long here!
Aye, Aye Skipper…welcome to Asia.
Of course not, you could check the room anytime before paying it. Its no big deal. But before you go to Thailand avoid those kind of hustle. There is a travel guide book or on-line what hotels or inn that recommended for the travelers. Just don’t go there w/o knowing where to stay, unless you are a NOMADIC.
I’ve done it many times and no one seems to think it’s odd or rude. Plus, they won’t throw their “bad” room at you. Probably when you ask to look first, that’s as good as it gets. Seems to me it’s rude to walk then if the room is OK, but maybe a little room for bargaining…
You are going to pay for it so it’s sensible to see it first. Seasoned travellers always have a look. Only last month I asked to inspect a room in Barstow, California. I found a scorpion runninmg round on the floor. Do you think that I firmed up the booking?
Doing so will show that you are a seasoned traveller!
You know from experience and you know are you are doing.
The hotel’s personals will know what you are and what they should be doing.
Its fine in a smaller, or family-run establishment
I always do, and have never felt that I insulted anyone.
