No, but I’ve been the representative for a couple of them — male Thai students as well.
Your student will probably be a bit on the quiet side and most likely rather polite. In a way, that’s a good thing, but it’s also harder to get her to open up if something is wrong or she has a problem. A key is NOT to accept a “yes” or “no” answer. Make sure she understands the question by repeating it back to you.
She will probably be very grade conscious. This isn’t a bad thing, but it could keep her from exploring all an American school has to offer. Encourage her to become involved in extra curricular activities such as music, sports, theater, etc.
Give her a role in the family. She is NOT a guest, but a family member. Make sure she has chores to do, rules to follow (along the lines of other family members) and that you hold her to them! A Thai girl may be a bit spoiled at first — labor is very cheap in her country — so you may have to be patient in explaining how chores are done! She may have never swept a floor or done the dishes before!
Make sure you include her in all your activities, but also allow her some “down time” as well. An exchange student can easily become overwhelmed with the language and culture shock.
Good luck and have fun!
