Power Converter In Thailand?
I will be traveling to Thailand (on business) and Cambodia, and will be taking two cameras, laptop, and ipod with me. I’ve heard that all electric power connection in that region are 220 volt. I’ll need to convert that to 110 volt to be able to charge batteries. Should I take a converter with me, or will I be able to find one once I get there, at a reasonable price?

Most electronic devices these will accept 100-240v 50-60Hz input these days and will convert the input to the proper output automatically, check the accepted input on the small box on your ac adapter/converter cords. The voltage in Cambodia is actually 230v but 10 volts is well within the voltage tolerance of almost all devices. You can easily buy converters here in Thailand and many hotels can supply them for you. You may or may not need plug adapters if you’re from the US as many sockets will accept the two blade and two blade with ground pin type of plugs used in the US, but some plugs only accept the two round pin type. It’s a good to carry a two round pin and a two blade adapter plug in Thailand and Cambodia. You can check this website for info on electricity:http://www.kropla.com/electric2.htm
I believe Thailand has similar plug-ins as the United States. And your laptop and camcorder should be able to charge without a converter. Your laptop should have a built in power conversion to DC current and won’t need anything additional to charge.
For portable computers, check the power adapter or the power ratings on the back or underneath the computer. Most portable computers are designed for travelers so they auto-sense and auto-switch between 100 and 240 volts. However, some do not.
Just check the little plug end on your laptop and see what it says. Like the other posts said, most laptops can use either voltage. But read the info printed on the plug end!
Some power outlets take the US style bladed plug, some take pin plugs only, some will take both in the same outlet. You can pick up a US to pin adapter for less than a dollar in many places, even in some supermarkets.
Just because an outlet can take a US style plug don’t ever assume it is 110 volts! I have been in some hotels that did have outlets that had labels on them saying 110 volts. Take your own chances!
You really won’t need a laptop with you at all unless you “really” need it for business not just for emails. There are lots and lots of cheap internet shops all over Thailand. If you are using the laptop to store photos you can also use an external hard drive instead. Most security boxes are not large enough to safely store a laptop. You would always have to carry the laptop with you or take a chance on leaving it in your hotel room.
If something is ever stolen from your hotel room don’t immediately blame the hotel staff, it could just as well be a fellow tourist that stole your items! Make sure you have bags that you can lock. Use the hotel security box for anything that fits and is valuable.
Good luck.
cody is correct that most modern power adapters, like on laptops, cameras, etc are auto-sensing. If you have older appliances, you CAN get adapters really cheap (maybe $5) at Pantip Plaza in bangkok as well as other places. Look for a black box about the size of a bar of soap.

All laptops and ipods are 110 to 240 volts, and your camera should be the same. Check out your black power box it will give you the voltage range.
